The Powerbook Ordeal, Part 1

mac.jpg

So. I broke down and bought a new laptop today. I've been meaning to upgrade my old mac (the TiBook G4 DVI 667Mhz) to a faster, bigger beast. Having gone to Japan to film the Uri Gagarn tour movie, I need to start editing... and you all know how that goes with me... So a new faster machine is the motivation I need... Of course, it's quite exciting to look back on the days of editing Dial-X on a G3 i-mac, slow as it was, it did work, and the movie did end up finishing..

Now though, I'm all psyched up about switchin over to Final Cut Pro Studio and making a kickass flick. So I need the speed. I need it.

And as such.. I purchased a new fast 15" powerbook.

I spent three hours at the apple store, calculating cost benefits of various potential purchases.. Do I buy the mac mini and forego firewire 800, audio inputs, RAM ceilings and small drives but all for a tiny sum? OR do I go for the G5 desktop, the beast of power, pop it next to my HP desktop and be king of my block? Or is it the imac I need? What about the benefits and logic behind having three computers? Do I sell the old laptop? If I buy a new one, then I can sell the old one.. but not if I get a desktop.. but what about the power? but what about the price? It was painful, I spent many minutes reading benchmark reports, only to begin to worry about the fate of version 1 of Tiger...

The smartest choice would have been to move to a jungle without electricity, but I'm not that bold.

So now, as I transition my files between these three machines, mull over what to do with the old old clamshell ibook in the closet sitting next to the broken down HP laptop, and curse my way through some HD spring cleaning, I'll keep you all updated.

I should move to a jungle and feed the victim-children of the tsunami.
